Ruby Bridges to Visit Schools in South Orange and Maplewood

Maplewood, New Jersey: One of America's best known civil rights activists will return to the South Orange Maplewood School District.

Ruby Bridges was the first African-American student to attend a previously all-white school in Louisiana. She was six years old at the time. 55 years later, Bridges will speak at Columbia High School in Maplewood on Thursday, January 21st, 2016, beginning at 7:00pm. 'An Evening with Ruby Bridges' will be part of The Parenting Center of the South Orange Maplewood School District's 2015-2016 Speaker Series.

In addition, according to South Orange Maplewood Board of Education documents, Bridges will visit students at the Marshall Elementary School in South Orange for a presentation and book signing.

This is not Bridges' first visit to Maplewood. She spoke at Maplewood Middle School in 2001, according to the South Orange Maplewood Community Coalition on Race.
