Cleanup Event Coming to Baxter Park

Newark, New Jersey: The Baxter Park Neighborhood Association will hold a Community Cleanup this Saturday, August 8th, from 9:00am to 12:00pm. Attendees will remove trash and clean up the sidewalks surrounding Baxter Park, a modern apartment community in University Heights. Norfolk, Orange, and Nesbit Streets will also be cleaned up. Drinks and snacks will be provided for volunteers, who should bring a white t-shirt and gloves. Participants should meet in the Baxter Park Community Room, located at 2 Wellington Way, just off of Sussex Avenue. The event will be sponsored by the Building Believers Trust Corporation (BBTC) of Newark. Click here to register. To learn more, click here, or call BBTC Executive Director Rhonda Coe at (973) 273-6234.

Local dignitaries, including Chris Christie, Cory Booker, and Anthony Marchetta, cut the ribbon on Baxter Park in 2013. The Baxter Park development was built at the site of the Baxter Terrace Housing Projects, which were torn down in 2012. Before Baxter Terrace was demolished, part of the exterior of one of the buildings was sent to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC to be preserved. It will become part of the collection of the National Museum of African American History and Culture, which will open within the next year.
