Downtown Newark Rite Aid Location to Close

Newark, New Jersey: A Newark pharmacy will soon be no more.

The Rite Aid Pharmacy location at 111 Market Street, at the corner of Washington Street, is closing this week. A store employee told Essex County Place that Thursday, August 4th will be the last day of business for the Downtown Newark store. Customer prescriptions will be transferred to the Rite Aid location on Broad Street, at the corner of South Street.

Market Street's Rite Aid is located in the building that was once home to Bamberger's and Macy's. It is located just across the street from the proposed Four Corner Millennium Project site. Last year, a Fallas Discount Store location also opened in the building, and the spaces currently occupied by Blue Jeans II and Urban Terrain are now available for lease.

Walgreens announced in 2015 that it will acquire Rite Aid Corporation, which is based in East Pennsboro, Pennsylvania. All of the Rite Aid locations in Greater Newark are located in the eastern half of Essex County, while Walgreens locations are spread throughout the county.

The closure of the Market Street Rite Aid leaves few pharmacies in Downtown Newark.
