Public Hearing to be Held Regarding East Orange Hospital Sale

East Orange, New Jersey: Another Essex County hospital
could be sold.

The management of East Orange General Hospital (EOGH), which is currently owned by non-profit Essex Valley Healthcare, is planning to sell it to Prospect Medical Holdings, a for-profit corporation.

EOGH filed for bankruptcy in November. Founded in 1903, the hospital has been located on Central Avenue in East Orange since 1926. Prospect Medical Holdings, which was founded 20 years ago, owns 13 hospitals in Rhode Island, Texas, and California, and is planning to acquire five hospitals in Delaware County, Pennsylvania.

The main East Orange Public Library, located the corner of South Arlington Avenue and Freeway Drive East, will host a public hearing this Friday, February 5th at 11:00am regarding the proposal. The hearing will be conducted by Assistant Attorney General Kavin K. Mistry.

Prospect had also applied to purchase St. Michael's Medical Center in Newark's Central Ward. However, it will likely be sold to Prime Healthcare Services.
