Maplewood Planning Board to Hear Wawa Proposal

Maplewood, New Jersey: Wawa is still planning to open a location in Maplewood.

The company, which is based in Wawa, Pennsylvania, is proposing to open a gas station and a convenience store near the Irvington border at 1515 Springfield Avenue, at the corner of Jacoby Street. Maplewood Township's Planning Board will approve or deny the site plan during a meeting on Tuesday.

The site, a former parking lot for the now-closed Maplewood Plumbing Supply store, lies just one block from a location of competing convenience store chain QuickChek. Across Springfield Avenue, a new 235-unit apartment building called Parke Place is being constructed.

Maplewood's Wawa would be the first in Essex County for company, which has locations in neighboring Elizabeth, Union County and Kearny, Hudson County.
