Maplewood, New Jersey: The Durand-Hedden House and Garden will host a program about the Gruning's Ice Cream and Candy chain on Sunday, June 7th from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. Gruning's was a small Newark-area chain of ice cream parlors, and their locations in South Orange and Maplewood were community institutions. One location was in Downtown South Orange where the Boccone South Restaurant is now, and another was on South Orange Avenue in Maplewood where The Top condominium tower is now located. Gruning's also operated locations in Short Hills, Caldwell, Plainfield, Newark's Roseville section, and Montclair. Attendees can see Gruning's memorabilia, taste fudge sauce that will have been made using the original Gruning's recipe, and play old-fashioned games and make ice cream. In addition, the Durand-Hedden Country Store will be open, and the exhibit about Maplewood's movie theater will be open for viewing. The Durand-Hedden House and Garden is located at 523 Ridgewood Road, across from Jefferson Elementary School.
