Newark to Open Women's Health Center

Newark, New Jersey: City officials are breaking ground today on a new project in a long neglected neighborhood of Newark's South Ward.

A health center for women will be constructed at 276-300 Clinton Avenue, at the corner of Stratford Place. The Mary Elizabeth Mahoney Women’s Health and Wellness Center will provide a variety of medical care services when it is constructed, according to city officials.

The center will open in a building that was partially built in 2008, but has sat abandoned until now. According to public records, the City of Newark will lease the property from Alpert and Alpert Development.

The site is located within one block of both the Central and East Wards, and is within the Clinton Hill Model Neighborhood Area, which is starting to see an increase in new development and businessClinton Avenue will also soon have a new arts center in an abandoned bank and a new Subway restaurant. In the past five years, the Genesis Clinton Hill Apartments, Coffee Express, Mayor Ras Baraka's Little City Hall, and the Donald M. Payne, Sr. Public Safety Complex have opened on the block.

The City of Newark will hold another groundbreaking for a new health center in the Bradley Court Housing Complex in the West Ward later this month.
