The Montclair Hawk Watch will open for the season on September 1. Managed by New Jersey Audubon, the Montclair Hawk Watch platform is located off of Edgecliff Road across the street from Mills Reservation. The Hawk Watch has taken place in Montclair annually since 1957, making the township one of America's oldest hawk watch locations. Visitors must climb a large stairwell up the hill in order to reach the platform, where a view of New Jersey and New York awaits them. The Hawk Watch will be open between 9am and 5pm, and will close on November 30.
An annual MAPSO tradition will take place this year on Saturday, September 20. The 12th annual Newstead 5K. The event will start at 9:00am. The Newstead 5K benefits the Achieve Foundation of South Orange and Maplewood, which raises funds for programs in the South Orange Maplewood School District.
"Everyone teams up to support educational excellence and innovation for all nine of our district’s schools", said race founder Helen Dubowy.
The Newstead 5K is not the only race taking place next month in Essex County. On September 14, the United Way of Essex and West Hudson and the City of Newark will take part in the Let's Move! Newark campaign by hosting the 10K Run for Healthy Kids. In addition to the 10K, there will be a fun run for children ages 12 and under.
