MAPSO News Roundup: SHU Weekend, Maplewood Chamber Dinner, Events on September 21


The 2014 Seton Hall Weekend will take place on October 3, 4, and 5 at the Seton Hall University campus in South Orange. According to the university website, "Seton Hall Weekend is a celebration of our community spirit and of the close ties enjoyed by alumni, students, faculty, staff, and the surrounding community". Various free tours will be available on Saturday, October 4, including of the university campus, WSOU radio studio, and the Market Research Center. Other scheduled events include a parent welcome reception, a 5K run, a trampoline show, live music, an art exhibition. craft beer tasting, scavenger hunt, children's theater performance, and much more. 

On Sunday, September 21, several events will take place in South Orange. 

-According to the South Orange Gaslight, the annual Newcomers Day celebration will take place at 1:00pm at the South Orange Public Library on Scotland Road. New residents of the village, as well as long-time residents, are invited to come and meet village leaders and representatives of local organizations. The Gaslight reported that Village President Alex Torpey will speak at the beginning of the event. 

-In addition, a reception will take place at 3pm next to the Tony Smith TAU sculpture in Meadowland Park for upcoming outdoor exhibition 'IN-SITE: the Intersection of Art and Architecture'. The exhibition, which will be located along the Rahway River Walkway, will feature sculptures by 16 artists. Visitors to the reception can meet the artists. Cake will be served to commemorate the birthday of artist Tony Smith. The project is presented by the Lennie Pierro Memorial Art Foundation, the Township of South Orange Village, and the Pierro Gallery.

-PlayDay South Orange will also take place that day from 1pm until 5pm in Downtown South Orange. The event from the South Orange Village Center Alliance is scheduled to feature street games on South Orange Avenue, an inflatable zone along Village Plaza, mini-golf near the Gateway building, a sports court on Vose Avenue, and health and fitness in Spiotta Park. The Main Stage featuring live music, dance, and a variety of games will be located at the intersection of South Orange Avenue and Valley Street. The Town Hall Deli Sloppy Joe Eating Contest will take place at the conclusion of PlayDay at the Main Stage at 5pm. 

The annual Maplewood Chamber of Commerce Distingushed Service Award Dinner will take place on Friday, September 19 at 6pm at the Maplewood Country Club on Baker Street. According to the Chamber website, the owners of Words Bookstore in Maplewood Village, Jonah & Ellen Zimiles, will be honored at the event.
