Update: Transformer Failure Causes Power Outages in South Orange

Hundreds of South Orange residents lost electricity and gas service on Sunday due to an underground transformer failure below South Ridgewood Road near West Third Street. The transformer failure took place at approximately 11:00am, and caused nearly 900 outages in the neighborhoods surrounding Walton Avenue, South Ridgewood Road, South Wyoming Avenue, and West South Orange Avenue. South Orange Police officers directed traffic at multiple intersections where traffic signals lost electricity.

South Ridgewood Road was closed shortly before noon between Conway Court and West Third Street so employees of PSE&G and the South Orange Fire Department could investigate the transformer failure. The road remains closed as of 4:30pm.

As of 5:00pm, electricity and gas service has been restored to most neighborhoods. PSE&G reports that outages are still affecting approximately 120 customers near Thornden Street.

Update: As of 6:20pm, PSE&G reports that outages are affecting less than 15 customers in South Orange.
