Carousel Construction Begins in Newark's Military Park

Newark, New Jersey: Construction has begun on the last step of the renovation of Military Park.

A carousel is being installed at the Downtown Newark park between Park Place and Broad Street. Installation began last week, and according to park officials, it is expected to be completed by April. The carousel will contain 16 horses, and is being designed to reflect the history of the city.

The project was approved by the Newark Landmarks and Historic Preservation Commission in February, 2015. Public carousel design sessions were held in 2014.

Military Park, which dates to 1667, was redeveloped and restored in 2014 by Biederman Redevelopment Ventures. The park now holds events, and contains the Burg restaurant, restrooms, and wi-fi. According to the project plans, an ice rink is also proposed for the park.

UPDATE: The carousel has opened.
