PHOTOS: President Obama Hosts White House Science Fair

Washington, District of Columbia: President Barack Obama hosted the 6th Annual White House Science Fair on Wednesday afternoon in Washington. 

Dozens of students from across the United States, including one from Hillsborough, Somerset County, presented projects that they had worked on for President Obama and the media. The students, who were the finalists in a national competition, ranged in age from nine to 19. 

"So this is an eclectic and diverse bunch", President Obama told attendees in the East Room. "But what they all share is this love of science and love of technology, and a belief that our youngest innovators can change the world," he added.

Another 7-Eleven Coming to East Orange

East Orange, New Jersey: The City of East Orange will soon have two 7-Eleven locations.

A new 7-Eleven convenience store will be located across from the Central Parkway Professional Building near the Garden State Parkway at 93 Hawthorne Avenue, at the corner of Central Avenue. The project was approved last week by the East Orange Planning Board, according to a legal notice. A gas station closed over a decade ago at the site. Currently, a building which used to contain Flowers by Marlo and the Central Mini Mart stands at the property. That building will be demolished to make way for the 7-Eleven franchise. 

7-Eleven opened its first East Orange location on Freeway Drive East near the main East Orange Public Library in December, 2015 after breaking ground in September. The company has been rapidly expanding in Essex County in recent years, and has opened stores in Livingston, Newark, South Orange, and Maplewood in recent years. Another franchise is proposed for Elizabeth Avenue in Newark's South Ward.

More On Main: Two New Businesses Open in Millburn

Millburn, New Jersey: Two new businesses opened within the last month on Main Street in Downtown Millburn.

Common Lot Restaurant opened at the end of March at 27 Main Street, at the corner of Essex Street. The restaurant , which is owned by Australia native Ehren Ryan and Austria native Nadine Ryan, serves a variety of items, from braised duck leg ragu to ribeye steak. It was built where the Expo Design Center and Contessa Designs used to stand.

In addition, Artist Hair Bar opened on March 26 at 12 Main Street, between Essex Street and the New Jersey Transit overpass. The barber shop is located in the space previously occupied by Town and Country Elegance Hair Salon.

New Building Could Come to Lower Broadway

Newark, New Jersey: A new development project in Newark's Lower Broadway neighborhood is moving forward.

The proposal for a new commercial building at 2-12 Gouverneur Street, between Broadway and Broad Street, will be heard at the next meeting of the Newark Central Planning Board on Monday, April 18th.  According to board minutes, the plan calls for an 18,000 square foot building with retail space on the first and second floors, with office space as well on the second floor. There would also be a 19 space parking lot should the project be approved.

Currently, Gary's Auto Collision and a private parking lot stand at the site.

Development Projects Continue in Newark's Ironbound

Newark, New Jersey: Two new development projects are coming to the Ironbound section of Newark's East Ward.

According to a legal notice, Sesnar Group, LLC has applied to the Newark Central Planning Board to build a 30,797 square foot five-story building at 852-854 Raymond Boulevard, next to the Gulf station near the Jackson Street Bridge. Should it be approved, the building would contain 16 apartments and would have a street-level garage with nine parking spaces. 

Currently, the site, which borders Market Street, lies vacant, though it was used as a private parking lot until recently. The proposal will be heard at the Central Planning Board meeting at 6:30pm on April 18th.

In addition, the City of Newark announced that officials broke ground on 'The Continental' on Friday. The complex will contain 89 apartments, commercial space, indoor parking, an exercise room, and outdoor recreation center, special event space, and a Wi-Fi lounge. It will be located on lots which currently sit vacant along Ferry Street, Main Street, and Magazine Street. There will be a shuttle service for residents to Newark Penn Station when the development is complete.

Like most new developments in the city, The Continental is receiving a long-term tax abatement.

Newark Police Opening Internal Affairs Office on Broad Street

Newark, New Jersey: The Internal Affairs Division of the Newark Police Department will be relocating again.

According to Newark Communications Director Frank Baraff, the Division is moving to 494 Broad Street, which is located near Riverfront Stadium between Bridge Street and Atlantic Street. 'Coming soon' signs have been posted on the first floor of the part of the building which was completed last year. A parking garage, a Cablevision call center, and News 12 New Jersey's Newark Newsroom are also located in the building.

Currently, NPD's Internal Affairs division is based at City Hall. It moved there in 2015 from the 4th Precinct in Newark's West Ward. Mayor Ras Baraka announced in January that a civilian will direct the Internal Affairs Division.

Newsstand and Cleaners Coming to Shoppes on Broad

Newark, New Jersey: Two new businesses will open in the Shoppes on Broad development in Downtown Newark.

Halsey Cleaners will move from 119 Halsey Street across from the New Jersey State Offices down the block to 64-74 Halsey Street, between Prudential Drive and New Street. The new location is expected to open this weekend. In addition, a newsstand is planned for the corner of Halsey Street and Prudential Drive, and the interior of the space is currently undergoing construction.

The Shoppes on Broad development is part of the new Prudential office complex. Qdoba Mexican Eats, Bright Horizons Child Care, and The Halal Guys are planning to open locations in the complex, and Starbucks Coffee, Ron Tomson, Nike Factory Store, and Blaze Pizza opened in 2015.
