Plans Continue for Hotels at Local Malls

Livingston, New Jersey: Hotels could be coming near both of Essex County's shopping malls.

A complex with a hotel and apartments is still planned for a lot near The Mall at Short Hills. Mack-Cali Realty Corporation has proposed to construct the buildings at 233 Canoe Brook Road at the site of a vacant office building. The Millburn Township Planning Board has held several hearings regarding the hotel and the apartment building, which would each have over 200 units. The next hearing will be held on June 1, according to The Item of Millburn and Short Hills. Currently, Millburn Township's only hotel is the Hilton Short Hills across JFK Parkway from the mall.

In addition, a Marriott hotel and restaurant are planned for part of the Livingston Mall property. The lot, located near the corner of Walnut Street and South Orange Avenue, has been used for storage recently, and carnivals have been held at the site. Mall owner Simon Property Group and Noble Investment Group have announced that a community forum regarding the project will be held on Monday, May 16th at 7:00pm at the Livingston Senior Center at 204 Hillside Avenue. Livingston's only hotel is the Westminster Hotel along Route 10.

Both proposals have been opposed by many community members. A Change.org petition against the Short Hills project has received over 1,300 signatures.
