A&P, Pathmark Owner, Files for Bankruptcy


Newark, New Jersey: The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company (A&P), which also owns Super Fresh and Pathmark Supermarkets, is filing for bankruptcy, according to the Wall Street Journal. The regional supermarket company, which is based in Montvale, Bergen County, was founded in 1859. It operates nine supermarkets in Essex County, including locations of Pathmark, Super Fresh, and A&P in Belleville, Pathmark locations in Montclair, Newark's Central Ward, Newark's Ironbound, South Orange and Irvington, and an A&P location in Upper Montclair. A&P had several additional Essex County locations before it filed for its first bankruptcy in 2010.

The Wall Street Journal also reported that 120 locations have potential buyers.
