Newark, New Jersey: 2016 marks the 350th anniversary of the City of Newark, and several local organizations will commemorate this occasion, including the Newark Public Library. The main branch of the library will host a new exhibit called 'Newark 350: Settlement, Growth, Renewal'. An opening reception will be held on Tuesday, January 19th, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, and the exhibit will remain on display for the rest of 2016. According to the library, the exhibit "provides both chronological and thematic approaches to the city’s people, places, architecture, politics, institutions, and education", and is funded in part by the New Jersey Historical Commission. The opening reception will feature a panel of notable Newarkers, moderated by Guy Sterling of the Newark History Society. To register, call (973) 733-7793. Millburn, New Jersey: Three new Subway sub sandwich restaurants will open across Essex County in the near future.
A franchise will open at 313C Millburn Avenue in Millburn, near the corner of Lackawanna Place. It will be the first Subway in Millburn Township. The space was previously occupied by a Second Time Around consignment store and Foot Solutions. In addition, a location will open in the Doddtown neighborhood of East Orange at 491-495 Prospect Street, at the corner of Dodd Street, at the new Power Gas Station. A Shell gas station and service center previously occupied the lot. Newark will also get a new Subway restaurant across from police headquarters. The building located at 488 Clinton Avenue, at the corner of Bergen Steet, was recently renovated after being abandoned for over a decade. Subway will occupy the first floor.
The South Orange Subway location closed in October, and franchisees recently opened locations in Irvington and Newark. Another location is planned for Bloomfield Center.
Subway already has more Essex County locations than any other restaurant chain does.

Newark, New Jersey: The fate of Saint Michael's Medical Center in Newark's Central Ward will be discussed at an upcoming meeting.
Prime Healthcare Services, a private for-profit medical company, is proposing to purchase Saint Michael's, a non-profit 357-bed facility, located at 268 Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard, which was established nearly 150 years ago by Franciscan Sisters of the Poor.
The public hearing will be held on Tuesday, January 5th, beginning at 5:00pm, at the New Jersey Institute of Technology's Campus Center Atrium. Assistant Attorney General Kavin K. Mistry will host the hearing, and members of the public may speak at the event.
The proposal has drawn fierce opposition by some community groups and leaders, though unions that represent hospital workers and some politicans support the sale, according to NJ Spotlight.
Prime Healthcare Services has recently been expanding into New Jersey, and acquired the Memorial Hospital of Salem County, St. Mary's General Hospital in Paterson, Passaic County and Saint Clare's Health System, which serves Morris and Sussex Counties, within the past year.
NJIT's Campus Center is located at 150 Bleeker Street, near Summit Street. Transportation is available using the Warren Street Station on the Newark Light Rail.

Glen Ridge, New Jersey: A program regarding contemporary Indian-American art will be held at the Women's Club of Glen Ridge this week. The event will be part of the Women's Club Art Department's Monthly Meeting and Luncheon, which will take place this Tuesday, January 5th. The luncheon will begin at 12:00pm, and the program will start at 1:00pm. Artist and area resident Ela Shah, who was born in Bombay, India, will speak about her work, which is themed around faith, search, and survival, according to the Women's Club. Tickets to the program are free to members, and cost $5 to members of the general public, and may be purchased at the door. Newark, New Jersey: A non-profit bike shop's Downtown Newark location has closed.
The Newark Bike Exchange, which is part of the Boys & Girls Club of Newark, occupied the ground floor space of 239 Washington Street, between Market and Campbell Street, for over three years, according to the program director. The space had previously been occupied by the Seed Gallery, which has since moved to Market Street.
However, the building, which dates to 1880, suffered a flood on December 1st, and the store will not be able to reopen reportedly due to the cost of fixing the power. In addition, the building previously occupied by the Newark Bike Exchange and surrounding buildings will be torn down in the near future to make way for the Four Corners Millennium Project, which will include new buildings containing apartments, hotels, stores, restaurants, and offices.
The shop sold and repaired new and used bicycles and equipment and held community events. There are other Bike Exchange locations in Trenton, Plainfield, and New Brunswick. The organization is currently looking for a new location for the Newark store.
