Apartment Building Planned Near Maplewood's Columbia High School

Maplewood, New Jersey:
A property in suburban Essex County that not been utilized for a decade could soon be the site of a new development.

Plans have been revealed for a new residential project at 479 Valley Street, between West Parker Avenue and Hixon Place, in Maplewood, just a few yards away from the South Orange border. Township records show that the new building is slated to contain 20 units, but it is not yet clear how many stories it would be. The developer, 479 Valley Rd., LLC, which is registered out of a Roseland law office building, is seeking major preliminary and final site plan approval. 479 Valley Rd., LLC acquired the tract in December 2016 for $525,000 from a Scotch Plains company, according to NJ Parcels records.

The property is located in a neighborhood business zone directly across the street from Columbia High School next to a parking lot for teachers. For several years, it has been a vacant and gated tract, though it previously contained an auto garage that was once occupied by E.O. Rockmann, Inc. and Essex Sports Cars, Inc. The area is within walking distance of the Maplewood and South Orange Train Stations and is served by the 31 bus to Newark Penn Station.

The Maplewood Planning Board will hear the proposal during its meeting this Tuesday, May 9th at 8:00pm at the Maplewood Municipal Building.
