Petco Planning to Open Downtown Newark Location

Newark, New Jersey: A new pet store could be coming to Downtown Newark.

According to the Newark Landmarks and Historic Preservation Commission, a Petco location is proposed for the 115-year-old Hahne and Co. Building at 609 Broad Street, at the corner of New Street. The 13,049 square foot store on the first floor would also contain a 'doggy day care'. Should it be approved by the commission, it will be the third Petco store in Essex County after West Orange and Verona.

Once a department store, the Hahne and Co. Building is currently being renovated as part of the Express Newark project, and will also contain a Whole Foods Market location, mixed-income housing, the Rutgers University-Newark Department of Arts, Culture, and Media, City National Bank's new headquarters, a Rutgers-Newark Barnes and Noble bookstore and more when completed.

Another pet shop, Petland Discounts, recently opened on Broad Street near the corner of Market Street.

UPDATE 8/6/16: The commission approved the proposal.
UPDATE 10/16: Barnes and Noble is planning to open in the development.
