South Orange Church Celebrates 120 Years

South Orange, New Jersey: A church in Downtown South Orange is celebrating 120 years of service.

The First Baptist Church of South Orange, located at 103 Valley Street, at the corner of Second Street, was founded in 1895, and has operated in the current building since 1913. According to WMCA, the church was started by a small group of Christian South Orange residents in a house in West South Orange Avenue as the 'Little Prayer Band', before becoming the 'First Baptist Church' in 1899. It is one of the oldest historically African-American churches in New Jersey.

A celebration hosted by gospel singer CeCe Winans will be held at the Renaissance Newark Airport Hotel in Elizabeth. Tickets cost $300.

A banner to commemorate the occasion has been placed across Valley Street outside of the church.
