Apartments Coming to 120-Year-Old Downtown Newark Building

Newark, New Jersey: A building in Downtown Newark will soon see revitalization.

The plans for the Bonnell Building, located at 196-198 Market Street, between Mulberry and Broad Streets, were approved with conditions this week by the City of Newark's Central Planning Board.

According to the plan, the ground floor spaces, one of which is currently vacant, will remain commercial spaces. The other space is occupied by the Quick Stop Pharmacy, and the vacant space used to house the Fresh Tortillas Grill. The six floors above will each contain three apartments, and the back of the building will be expanded. The upper floors have been vacant for several decades.

The Bonnell Building was built in 1895, and originally was used as an office building. According to the National Park Service, architect Thomas Cressey designed the building, along with several others, including the Spingarn Building, in Downtown Newark.
