PHOTOS: Columbia High School Inducts Zach Braff Into Hall of Fame


Maplewood, New Jersey: Zach Braff, who was raised in South Orange, was inducted into Columbia High School's Hall of Fame during the school's annual Hall of Fame assemblies on Friday morning. Braff, an actor, producer, and director, graduated from the Maplewood school in 1993. He was introduced by members of the student council, Principal Elizabeth Aaron, and Johanna Wright. Wright, a current member of the South Orange Maplewood Board of Education, was one of Braff's teachers at South Orange Middle School. Following the ceremony, Braff signed his autograph for students.

Zach Braff was inducted into South Orange Middle School's Hall of Fame in 2013. He also attended Marshall Elementary School and Jefferson Elementary School.

Other members of Columbia High School's Hall of Fame include Lauryn Hill, David Javerbaum, and Judith Viorst.

Also a graduate of Columbia High School, South Orange Maplewood School District (SOMSD) Acting Superintendent James Memoli was honored by Principal Aaron during the assembly. Memoli, a 44 year employee, is retiring at the end of this school year. He graduated from Columbia High School in 1964.

4-H Farm Camps Coming to Montclair


Montclair, New Jersey: A 4-H Farm Camp will take place at the Montclair Community Farms this summer. The cost is $200 per week. Activities will include gardening, learning about the environment, and more. In addition, there will be a field trip for campers to the Rutgers G.H. Cook Campus farm facilities in Middlesex County. The Montclair Community Farms are located adjacent to the Montclair Historical Society. All proceeds of the camp will benefit the Montclair Community Farms. Vailsburg Green Day Coming to Norwood Gardens


Newark, New Jersey: The Vailsburg Green Day will take place this Saturday, May 30th at the Norwood Gardens. Residents of Newark's Vailsburg neighborhood are encouraged to come grow food and flowers together as a community. Free breakfast will be provided to attendees at 9:00am, and a free lunch will be served at 12:30pm. Adults must accompany children. The event will be presented by the Unified Vailsburg Services Organization, the Block Club Coalition, and the Vailsburg Garden Committee. Newark Farmers Market to Open June 4


Newark, New Jersey: The Newark Downtown District's Farmers Market will reopen for the season on Thursday, June 4th. The Common Greens Farmers Market will be held at PSE&G Plaza on Thursdays from 11:00am to 3:00pm until November 19th. This is the 15th year of the market, which sells a variety of fruits, vegetables, and spices, in addition to jewelry and other products.  SNAP, WIC, and other vouchers are all accepted. PSE&G Plaza is located near the corner of Raymond Boulevard and Park Place. Transportation is available by taking the Newark Light Rail to the Military Park Station.

Fishing Derby Coming to Crystal Lake


West Orange, New Jersey: The Township of West Orange will sponsor the 22nd Annual Fishing Derby. The event will take place at Crystal Lake. on Saturday, June 6th at 9:00am. The event will be postponed to Sunday, June 7th in case of inclement weather. Attendees should bring their own fishing gear, but bait will be for sale, as will light refreshments. Registration can be made on site, and all children will receive a gift. As per state regulations, attendees who are over the age of 15 must have a fishing license. To learn more, call (973) 325-4150. Event sponsors include the West Orange Recreation Department, the West Orange Police Department, Hooked on Fishing Not on Drugs, and the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife. Crystal Lake is located at off of Prospect Avenue on Boland Drive, near the Oskar Schindler Performing Arts Center and Eagle Rock Lanes.

PHOTOS: Agnes Varis NJTV Studio Opens at Newark's Gateway Center


Newark, New Jersey: The ribbon was cut Wednesday afternoon for the new Agnes Varis Studio of NJTV, New Jersey's public television station. The new studio is located at 2 Gateway Center in Downtown Newark. Dozens of local leaders came to the grand opening celebration, including Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, Senator Cory Booker, Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr., State Senator Thomas H. Kean, Jr., Assemblyman Jon Bramnick, and State Senate President Stephen Sweeney. NJTV's news program, NJTV News with Mary Alice Williams is taped live in the Agnes Varis Studio every weekday at 6:00pm, and visitors to the Gateway Center can watch the show as it is produced. Prior to Newark, NJTV operated out of the WNET studio in New York, though NJTV News was originally housed at the production facilities of Montclair State University. NJTV's predecessor, NJN, also operated a studio in Downtown Newark, before the network was shut down in 2011.

Bloomfield Police to Hold Neighborhood Watch Meeting


Bloomfield, New Jersey: The Township of Bloomfield will hold a Neighborhood Watch Meeting at the Bloomfield Civic Center on Tuesday, June 16th at 7:00pm. All residents and workers in Bloomfield are encouraged to attend this meeting, which will be presented by Mayor Michael Venezia, Police Director Samuel A. DeMaio, and the Community Policing Unit of the Bloomfield Police Department. Attendees will learn more about the benefits of a Neighborhood Watch Program, and can learn how the programs can lower insurance rates and raise property values. The Bloomfield Civic Center is located opposite the Green at 84 Broad Street, next to the Bloomfield Public Library.

Charles Blow to Speak at Montclair Library


Montclair, New Jersey: Charles Blow, a columnist for The New York Timeswill speak at the main branch of the Montclair Public Library as part of the MPL's Open Book/Open Mind Series. The event will take place in the Library's auditorium on Sunday, May 31st at 4:00pm. Blow will discuss his memoir, Fire Shut Up in My Bones. Art on the Avenue Coming to Caldwell


Caldwell, New Jersey: The annual Art on the Avenue will return to Caldwell this Saturday, May 30th. The event will take place along the sides of Bloomfield Avenue from 10:00am to 5:00pm. 
Attendees can view and purchase a variety of artworks, photos, sculptures, and crafts. Prizes will be awarded to winning artists. In addition, several Caldwell businesses will offer discounts to event attendees. The Caldwell Merchants Organization will sponsor 'Art on the Avenue'. Caldwell can be reached by using Bus 71 from Newark, East Orange, West Orange, Livingston, Roseland, and West Caldwell, and Bus 29 along the Bloomfield Avenue corridor. In case of rain or inclement weather, the event will be postponed to Sunday, May 31st from 12:00pm to 5:00pm.

Computer Classes to Continue at Newark Library


Newark, New Jersey: The Main Branch of the Newark Public Library will continue to hold computer classes in June. Classes will be available in both English and Spanish, and all classes are free. 

The schedule is as follows:

English:

Excel 1 
Microsoft Excel uses formulas to calculate numbers in spreadsheets (computerized business ledgers), graphs, and tables. This class introduces you to the program, beginning with the spreadsheet and elementary formatting.
Prerequisites: basic typing, Mouse, and Word 1 skills (see Word 1 description below).

PowerPoint 1 Create a basic slideshow presentation (for sales work, teaching, etc.) with PowerPoint.

Resume Creation 
An introduction to resume preparation. Genealogy Seminar Coming to Newark


Newark, New Jersey: The Spring Seminar of The Genealogical Society of New Jersey will take place on Saturday, June 6th from 10:00am to 4:00pm. The New Jersey Historical Society will co-sponsor and host the event at their headquarters in Newark. There will be a variety of speakers, discussing topics like conducting research at the New Jersey Historical Society, National Archives in Lower Manhattan, the Jersey Collection at the New York Public Library, and the New Jersey State Archives in Trenton. Other topics will include Colonial New Jersey and the nearly 350 year history of Newark. Publications will be available or purchases, and there will be a variety of door prizes. The registration fee is $45 for members of the New Jersey Historical Society or the Genealogical Society of New Jersey, or $50 for the general public. The fee includes a beverage, a snack, and a choice of a turkey wrap, roast beef wrap, or a salad. The New Jersey Historical Society is located at 52 Park Place, next to the WBGO-FM studios. Free parking will be available at 25 Fulton Street, near Chase Bank, and the New Jersey Historical Society can be accessed using the Military Park and NJPAC Stations of the Newark Light Rail.

Free Admission to Turtle Back Zoo for Essex County Open House


West Orange, New Jersey: The 13th annual Essex County Open House will take place this Saturday, May 30th from 10:00am to 2:00pm at the Essex County Turtle Back Zoo in West Orange. Admission to the zoo will be free and there will be a variety of activities from every Essex County department and office. There will be carnival games, a train display, trivia contests, and a dunk tank, among other activities. In addition, county residents can learn more about local agencies from their directors. The Turtle Back Zoo is located in the South Mountain Recreation Complex at 560 Northfield Avenue, and can be accessed using NJ Transit Bus 73 from Newark, East Orange, and Livingston, and Coach USA Bus 77 from New York. Parking will be free.

Bloomfield Historical Society to Host Program About TIA


Bloomfield, New Jersey: The Historical Society of Bloomfield will sponsor a program regarding the Bloomfield Town Improvement Association on Tuesday, May 26th at 7:30pm. The event will take place at the Bloomfield Civic Center. According to the Historical Society of Bloomfield, the TIA was formed in 1907 "with the goal of beautifying the town". Members worked to clean up parks, garbage dumps, tenement houses, and streets throughout the Township of Bloomfield. Attendees will see photos of Bloomfield before and after the TIA projects. The program will be presented by Rich Rockwell. The Bloomfield Civic Center is located at 84 Broad Street, next to the Bloomfield Public Library.

NJTV to Host Ribbon Cutting for New Studio


Newark, New Jersey: New Jersey's public television network will host a grand opening celebration for their new studio in Newark on Wednesday, May 27th at 4:30pm. NJTV News began using the The Agnes Varis NJTV Studio on May 18. The studio is located on the concourse of 2 Gateway Center, which connects to Newark Penn Station. Visitors to the Gateway Center can watch the 'NJTV News with Mary Alice Williams' program as it is taped live at 6:00pm every weekday. The Agnes Varis NJTV Studio also features a community room and NJTV's newsroom. NJTV News was originally produced at the broadcasting facilities of Montclair State University, and was most recently produced at the WNET studios in Manhattan. NJTV's predecessor, New Jersey Network (NJN), operated a newsroom at the Robert Treat Center in Newark until the network was shut down in 2011.

Developer's Finance Forum Coming to Newark


Newark, New Jersey: The Newark Community Economic Development Corporation will present the 2015 Developer's Finance Forum on Friday, June 5th from 10:30am to 5:00pm. The forum will be held at The Newark Club, atop One Newark Center on the 22nd Floor of 1085 Raymond Boulevard. The event is open to all, including developers, investors, and real estate professionals. According to the Newark CEDC, discussed topics will include development opportunities in the city, Newark's future, funding options, New Market Tax Credits, and case studies of the former Hahnes Building and the former National State Bank Building. Sponsors include United Fund Advisers, the City of Newark, and the Newark Department of Economic and Housing Development.
